How would you describe your job?
I am a trials officer and I am involved in all aspects of trials out in the fields and at Arlary with a focus on machinery maintenance, operation, and repair.
What’s the best part of your job?
The job is always very interesting as no 2 days are ever the same. We are always dealing with new challenges which keep us all engaged, there is literally never a dull moment. I also like the fact that I learn something new pretty much every day and my more experienced colleagues are always happy to share their knowledge with me. Finally, I love the fact that I get to tour the whole country and experience different systems. I really enjoy seeing different areas of Scotland in all seasons and in all weather!
What’s your favourite time of year and why?
Harvest. We all enjoy seeing the fruits of our labour, but the best thing about harvest is teamwork. We have a great team spirit here at Scottish Agronomy and at harvest time everyone gives 100%. Plus, for the last 2 years, the weather has been great.
Why work in agriculture?
Aged 14 I helped a friend’s Dad with lambing and I was hooked. I knew that’s what I wanted to do. After becoming a father myself I made the move into arable farming which I love just as much. To be honest, I’m just a big kid and I love forklifts and anything with an engine.
Why do you think Scottish Agronomy stands apart?
As well as being completely independent, we have a great highly experienced team who all work really hard.
What has been your career highlight so far?
I’ve always had an interest in machinery and engines so when our Facilities Manager, Steve asked if I would be interested in focusing on machinery I was delighted. It felt like a real recognition of all my hard work and I was pleased he felt I had the skills to take on these new responsibilities.
Tell us a surprising fact about yourself.
Everyone knows I love coffee. In fact, I’ll grab a latte any chance I can but, not many people know that I have a collection of novelty mugs – over 30 of them. But they are for display only, don’t anyone dare drink coffee out of them!
