MEET – YASEMIN

MEET – YASEMIN

17th April 2025

YASEMIN ILMAN – TRIALS OFFICER

Yasemin grew up on her grandparents’ farm, which was mostly focused on livestock with some arable farming. All through high school, she had a real passion for biology and a love for animals and after finishing school in 2019, went on to study Agricultural Science at the University of Edinburgh, where she earned a BSc, which led to my first harvest job in a laboratory testing grain in Edinburgh, where she stayed in for three years before discovering Scottish Agronomy.

What’s your favourite time of year, and why?
Summer is definitely my favourite time of year. The long daylight hours and better weather mean we can be outside most of the day, enjoying the fresh air and getting things done in the field.

Why do you work in Agriculture?
I love the combination of being outdoors, problem-solving, and working with people who are genuinely passionate about what they do. It keeps things interesting and rewarding.

What do you think makes Scottish Agronomy special?
It’s the people. There’s a strong culture of sharing knowledge. The level of expertise within the company is something I really admire. Also the team is like one big family.

What has been your career highlight so far?

My career highlight so far has been progressing from a university student learning about agricultural to getting a harvest job in Edinburgh to then a role with Scottish Agronomy. It’s been really rewarding to apply what I learned at university in a practical setting and to keep developing my knowledge through working with such experienced and supportive colleagues.

Tell us a surprising fact about you?
I once took myself on a two-week solo holiday to Spain to volunteer on a farm, where in exchange for helping with daily chores, I got free accommodation and the chance to ride all the horses at the yard. It was an incredible experience and something I’ll never forget.

If I wasn’t working for Scottish Agronomy, I would have been…
I’ve always had a love for horses and own two myself. If I wasn’t working here, I’d love to do something horse-related, maybe own a livery yard or even ride professionally. I also love the sun, so living and working in another country would be a dream!

Best piece of advice you’ve been given?
You can learn something from everyone, even if it’s what not to do.

Guilty Pleasure?
Definitely buying outdoor clothes! I’ve got way too many jackets, it’s becoming a bit of an obsession.

Ideal Weekend / Happy Place?
My ideal weekend would be somewhere sunny, staying in a log cabin with my two horses, my dog, and my partner. That’s the dream.

Best or worst job you’ve ever had and why?
The worst job I’ve had was during university, working night shifts at a takeaway. It was exhausting and not something I’d want to do again!
